One dead as police fire on protesters in north Indian holy town
(AFP)

21 April 2004

NEW DELHI - One person was killed and 100 injured on Wednesday in the Indian holy town Haridwar when police opened fire on a stone-throwing crowd protesting the alleged rape of a woman by police, a news report said.

The Press Trust of India, quoting local authorities, said a man died after police opened fire on a mob that stormed towards them.

Riot police tried to hold back a swelling crowd of protesters who torched a vehicle in the heart of the city as they chanted slogans against the police, television footage showed.

The violence erupted after a woman said she was raped by two policemen, a charge the police denied.

Haridwar, 214 kilometers (133 miles) north of New Delhi, is visited daily by thousands of pilgrims who come to bathe at the point where the sacred Ganges river leaves the Himalayas for the plains.
